About This Book

The Talisman, first published in 1825, is the second novel in Sir Walter Scott's Tales of the Crusaders, following The Betrothed.

Set during the Third Crusade, the novel follows the Scottish knight Sir Kenneth as he serves in the army of Richard the Lionheart in the Holy Land. Amid rivalries among the Crusader leaders, political intrigue, religious conflict, and the dangers of war, Kenneth becomes entangled in events that test his courage, loyalty, and honour.

Scott brings the world of the Crusades vividly to life, portraying legendary figures including Richard the Lionheart and Saladin alongside fictional characters caught between personal loyalty and the demands of war.

Combining adventure, romance, chivalry, political intrigue, and historical drama, The Talisman explores the enduring themes of honour, faith, loyalty, courage, and the human cost of conflict.
